00:00:40.435 --> 00:00:49.484
Today, we're looking at the forgiveness where ethics are involved the dilemma of justice and accountability.

00:00:49.484 --> 00:01:02.229
Before we dive into that entangled topic, though, of ethics and forgiveness in the workplace, let's have a quick word from the Vet Staff's podcast partner, vetclinicjobscom.

00:01:48.531 --> 00:01:58.033
Today, we're considering forgiveness and ethics, and we'll also touch a little bit on justice.

00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:15.370
In the veterinary sector, the tension between justice and forgiveness can be seen in various situations, most often, although not always involving ethical dilemmas relating to the treatment of animals and interactions with clients.

00:02:15.370 --> 00:02:24.325
I did a bit of digging on the VCNZ website to see what kind of events end up before the Council's disciplinary committee.

00:02:24.325 --> 00:02:44.230
Now, from what I could see, it appears the website hasn't been updated since 2019, or no complaints have been laid for a long time, or the decisions are now only available in a member's only area of the website, or the most recent decisions.

00:02:44.230 --> 00:02:49.229
So the Kiwi cases I'm going to refer to are a few years old.

00:02:49.229 --> 00:02:56.866
Because of that, I'm also going to include some more recent international ones from the UK and Australia.

00:02:56.866 --> 00:03:09.110
The Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinarians in New Zealand is a 121-page document that was last updated in January 2020, so not so long ago.

00:03:10.039 --> 00:03:15.592
Like many registered professions, it requires its practitioners to be fit and proper.

00:03:15.592 --> 00:03:32.008
In general terms, fit and proper refers to someone of good character who abides by the laws of their country and elsewhere, and is likely to do so whilst being the holder of the authorisation or an authorisation.

00:03:32.008 --> 00:03:59.782
An authorisation covers, for example, your APC or a real estate salesperson's right to sell real estate, or your insurance broker's right to advise on insurance matters, or the men and women sitting on the flight deck of an aircraft, driving the bus or train you caught to work, or the last licensed cab driver, not an Uber driver cab driver who drove you from A to B.

00:03:59.782 --> 00:04:07.444
The results of failing that fit and proper test have different ramifications and different jurisdictions.

00:04:07.444 --> 00:04:14.592
In veterinary, medical and transport, for example, lives are at stake, human and animal.

00:04:15.479 --> 00:04:35.673
When it comes to veterinary council disciplinary findings, consideration is given not only to the legal requirement in one case that I found it involved monetary theft in another fraud but also how an individual's actions reflect on their profession as a whole.

00:04:35.673 --> 00:04:47.752
Remember, regardless of what the offence and I say offence in the air quotes is, forgiving someone doesn't mean that you agree or condone their actions.

00:04:47.752 --> 00:04:54.913
What it does is it frees you up emotionally so you and they can move on.

00:04:54.913 --> 00:05:02.305
If you haven't listened to the first episode in this series, go and have a listen, because that's where I cover this.

00:05:02.305 --> 00:05:12.024
You're looking for episode 146, I will put links in the notes where you're listening to this on the audio app of your choice.

00:05:12.024 --> 00:05:17.971
So what does?

00:05:17.971 --> 00:05:25.732
What type of ethical dilemmas might occur in a veterinary clinic where forgiveness could be required?

00:05:25.732 --> 00:05:30.685
We have instances of medical malpractice and negligence.

00:05:30.685 --> 00:05:39.550
Vets and nurses may occasionally make mistakes or face situations where their actions result in harm to animals.

00:05:39.550 --> 00:05:50.435
In these events, clients may demand accountability and justice, such as compensation for medical bills or legal action against the veterinary professional.

00:05:51.004 --> 00:06:00.273
We vet staff had a situation that involved a surgical near-miss or a surgery near-miss with one of our locum vets a few years ago.

00:06:00.273 --> 00:06:02.267
It was exactly that.

00:06:02.267 --> 00:06:04.334
Actually, it was more than a few years ago now.

00:06:04.334 --> 00:06:08.944
It was way back, and when was it 2019.

00:06:08.944 --> 00:06:08.944
?

00:06:08.944 --> 00:06:11.012
It was exactly that a near-miss.

00:06:11.012 --> 00:06:14.093
The vet had a bit of a brain blip.

00:06:14.093 --> 00:06:19.031
The term he used would need to be bleeped out, if I used it on this podcast.

00:06:19.031 --> 00:06:23.375
The end result was no harm was done to the animal.

00:06:24.064 --> 00:06:27.394
It took the vet, understandably, a bit of getting over.

00:06:27.394 --> 00:06:31.595
He doubted his ability to be a surgeon for a long while after.

00:06:31.595 --> 00:06:35.915
For him to move on, self-forgiveness would have been involved.

00:06:35.915 --> 00:06:38.870
We never actually talked about that, he and I.

00:06:38.870 --> 00:06:49.257
From a pastoral care perspective, though, I arranged for him to have as many sessions with a counsellor as he required at the time.

00:06:49.257 --> 00:06:55.497
The top brass at the group where he was locuming, however, did not forgive.

00:06:55.497 --> 00:06:59.834
They refused to have him locum at any of their clinics.

00:06:59.834 --> 00:07:08.634
Interestingly, though, the team whom he'd worked alongside for a few days a week for quite a few years, really wanted him back.

00:07:08.634 --> 00:07:12.615
As far as they were concerned, there was nothing to forgive.

00:07:12.615 --> 00:07:14.129
No harm was done.

00:07:14.129 --> 00:07:19.175
Steps were taken by him as soon as he thought harm had occurred.

00:07:19.175 --> 00:07:25.576
They thought he'd done everything any reasonable person could have done in the situation.

00:07:25.576 --> 00:07:34.151
They considered him competent, fit and proper, an upstanding registered veterinarian that they were proud to work alongside.

00:07:34.151 --> 00:07:38.894
The lack of forgiveness from head office was unequivocal.

00:07:38.894 --> 00:07:48.338
The clinical director was unwilling to budge on their decision made On the vet forgiveness matrix which I talked about last week.

00:07:48.338 --> 00:07:56.817
That decision would have been made from someone standing in the bottom right quadrant where the unwillings hang out.

00:07:56.817 --> 00:08:05.249
I'll put a link to that episode if you're interested in finding out more about the vet clinic forgiveness matrix.

00:08:05.689 --> 00:08:13.074
Again, on the show notes of this episode, we also then getting back to ethical and moral forgiveness dilemmas.

00:08:13.074 --> 00:08:21.889
We also have the euthanasia and end of life decisions that some vets feel like they have to make all too frequently.

00:08:21.889 --> 00:08:29.730
There are some vets who struggle with self forgiveness every time they're asked or required to euthanasia as an animal.

00:08:29.730 --> 00:08:34.154
Regardless of whether it's the humane thing to do, they still struggle.

00:08:34.154 --> 00:08:40.616
There are some vet nurses who also struggle to support the vet in these procedures.

00:08:40.616 --> 00:08:42.791
For them it's an absolute no.

00:08:43.485 --> 00:08:53.294
On the other side of the end of life dilemma are the clients who can't afford treatment which may result in euthanizing an animal.

00:08:53.294 --> 00:09:00.684
Then the vet or the nurse has the dilemma of their resentment towards the client for being in that situation.

00:09:00.684 --> 00:09:08.748
I'm sure you know what I'm talking about the thoughts that if someone can't afford treatment they shouldn't be a pet owner in the first place.

00:09:08.748 --> 00:09:20.433
Really distressing also is when there's animal abuse, intentional harm or neglect, when reporting to the appropriate authorities is required.

00:09:20.433 --> 00:09:27.447
This can be especially hard for large animal vets who have formed a meaningful relationship with the client.

00:09:27.447 --> 00:09:35.828
Maybe the farmer has his or her own mental stuff going on, depression or an ability to cope, whatever.

00:09:35.828 --> 00:09:44.187
It still creates the situation where forgiveness is still a choice In situations like this.

00:09:44.187 --> 00:09:53.735
We also have the questions about justice for the abused animal versus the possibility of forgiveness or rehabilitation for the owner.

00:09:53.735 --> 00:09:56.753
What about veterinary research as well?

00:09:56.753 --> 00:10:04.928
There may be ethical dilemmas related to animal testing and experimentation for some vets and some nurses.

00:10:04.928 --> 00:10:22.171
On one hand you've got researchers who may argue that the pursuit of scientific knowledge justifies certain procedures that could harm animals, while others are advocating for humane practices and the need for accountability when animal welfare is compromised.

00:10:22.171 --> 00:10:30.885
And then there are some who have the viewpoint that no testing or experimentation is justified ever.

00:10:35.966 --> 00:10:48.994
Veterinarians are held to professional ethical standards Allied veterinary professionals soon will be and this includes providing appropriate care and maintaining client confidentiality.

00:10:48.994 --> 00:10:55.336
When these standards are violated, issues of accountability and justice come to the fore.

00:10:55.336 --> 00:11:05.671
Veterinarians and veterinary nurses need to ensure their communication is top-notch, that is, effective when speaking with their clients.

00:11:05.671 --> 00:11:15.480
If or when it's not, this is when misunderstandings and or miscommunications and or misrepresentations occur.

00:11:15.480 --> 00:11:23.227
The client then feels wronged and or holds the veterinary professional responsible for the outcomes.

00:11:23.227 --> 00:11:34.022
Trying to address these issues while upholding professional ethics and maintaining understanding can be hugely challenging.

00:11:34.503 --> 00:11:36.611
I'm not saying that any of this is easy.

00:11:36.611 --> 00:11:50.599
In the veterinary sector, the tension between justice and forgiveness is particularly sensitive because of the human animal bonds that clients have with their animals and pets.

00:11:50.599 --> 00:12:10.605
Veterinary professionals often find themselves in situations where navigating these ethical dilemmas to ensure the well-being of animals, whilst also considering the emotional needs of their client, feels like they're walking in an emotional minefield or on a tight rope.

00:12:10.605 --> 00:12:15.275
One wrong word or one misstep and everything could blow up.

00:12:15.275 --> 00:12:28.995
Finding the right balance between justice, accountability and forgiveness is a complex and ethically challenging situation or space to find yourself in.

00:12:28.995 --> 00:12:38.480
There are all sorts of instances where forgiveness is a choice.

00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:43.095
I'm not saying it's easy, but I am saying it's a choice.

00:12:43.095 --> 00:12:47.788
The moral dilemma is what makes it fraught with tension.

00:12:47.788 --> 00:13:06.687
For example, how do you forgive the vet nurse, for example, who was struck off the RCVS register after she was convicted of communicating with someone the RCVS believed to be aged under 16 for the purpose of sexual gratification?

00:13:07.168 --> 00:13:22.011
The RCVS veterinary nurse disciplinary committee made its unusual decision to grant anonymity to an individual referred to as X, who appeared before them in March 2021.

00:13:22.011 --> 00:13:33.714
This decision was based on the acknowledgment of a quote a real and immediate threat to the individual's safety and security if their identity was disclosed.

00:13:33.714 --> 00:13:42.890
The case involved the vet nurse pleading guilty in 2020 to attempting to communicate with a person under 16 for sexual gratification.

00:13:42.890 --> 00:13:57.282
As a result, they received a probation order, had to register on the sexual offences register for five years, and was subject to, or were subject to, a sexual offences prevention order for five years.

00:13:57.282 --> 00:14:20.758
The committee assessed whether this conviction constituted serious professional misconduct, citing aggravating factors such as the risk of harm to a minor, premeditated misconduct, involvement, multiple online platforms, predatory behavior and the involvement of a vulnerable 15-year-old.

00:14:20.758 --> 00:14:38.404
Siris Jones, who chaired the committee and who spoke on its behalf, said, and a quote the committee was satisfied that the sentence imposed on X, which included X being subject to a sexual harm prevention order until 2025.

00:14:38.404 --> 00:14:56.457
Resulted in the profession of veterinary nurses being brought into disrepute and, in the committee's judgment, public confidence in the profession would be undermined if the committee did not find that the conviction rendered X unfit to practice as a veterinary nurse.

00:14:56.457 --> 00:14:57.581
End quote.

00:14:58.605 --> 00:15:05.408
How about the vet who cashed in by performing needless hip operations on dogs for financial gain?

00:15:05.408 --> 00:15:07.173
How would you forgive him?

00:15:07.173 --> 00:15:19.144
He was struck off but he still operated on three dogs a coca-spaniel, a staffy bull terrier and a West Highland terrier and a Keita cross.

00:15:19.144 --> 00:15:26.148
Each had needless hip operations in 2016 and 2017.

00:15:26.148 --> 00:15:32.066
The vet had been a senior partner at a medivit practice in Kent in the UK.

00:15:32.066 --> 00:15:44.166
Or, how do you forgive the vet nurse who was struck off the RCVS register for twice being under the influence of alcohol whilst working as a locum?

00:15:44.166 --> 00:15:48.446
She did this twice in 2016 and 2017.

00:15:48.446 --> 00:15:52.105
When the time came, she didn't attend the hearing.

00:15:52.105 --> 00:16:03.506
It was also alleged that a prior conviction of drink driving in 2013 rendered her unfit to practice, but she still did until she was struck off.

00:16:03.506 --> 00:16:31.243
When incidents like these and ones where no animals were endangered like the vet who faced disciplinary action, including a nine-month suspension, supervision upon return and a $43,000 fine by the VCNZ because of unprofessional conduct, lack of respect for colleagues and inadequate responses to the complaints assessment committee, that came under the heading of bullying.

00:16:31.243 --> 00:16:44.686
And then there's the Irish vet in Perth who, in 2021, was struck off after a boozy weekend away with friends after she injected herself and them her friends with ketamine.

00:16:45.315 --> 00:16:53.081
When forgiveness becomes a moral dilemma, how do you get to the point where you can forgive?

00:16:53.081 --> 00:17:03.947
Here are some steps you can take so that you can consciously choose to forgive.

00:17:03.947 --> 00:17:08.925
Remember, I'm not saying that by forgiving you can do what was done.

00:17:08.925 --> 00:17:21.165
Neither am I saying it's going to be an easy path to walk, but with willingness, anything is possible when you've got a whole raft of moral complexities going on.

00:17:21.165 --> 00:17:27.384
Here are some things that you can take into account to help you get to the point where you can forgive.

00:17:28.016 --> 00:17:32.915
First, seek to understand the moral dilemma Clearly.

00:17:32.915 --> 00:17:40.684
Define to yourself the moral dilemma you're in and understand why you find it challenging.

00:17:40.684 --> 00:17:50.445
You have to consider it from your own viewpoint, because the other person stepped over the line so obviously maybe perhaps they weren't even considering it.

00:17:50.445 --> 00:17:52.019
Well, look at that in a minute.

00:17:52.019 --> 00:18:04.026
But first shine a light on your conflicting values and principles, which are being played out right now, which you think you'll be compromising if you forgive.

00:18:04.026 --> 00:18:07.144
So seek to understand the moral dilemma.

00:18:07.144 --> 00:18:14.006
Then empathize and reflect If possible, attempt to empathize with everyone involved.

00:18:14.375 --> 00:18:17.364
What do you think could have caused them to do what they did?

00:18:17.364 --> 00:18:21.324
Attempt to walk a few moons in their moccasins.

00:18:21.324 --> 00:18:25.223
What would it have been like for them at the time?

00:18:25.223 --> 00:18:30.826
With empathy comes your willingness to seek perspective.

00:18:30.826 --> 00:18:46.882
If walking a few moons in their moccasins doesn't help with empathy, then talk to people you trust friends, family members or mentors who are willing and able to give different perspectives on what could have happened or actually what did happen.

00:18:46.882 --> 00:18:49.419
So we've covered that.

00:18:49.419 --> 00:19:00.365
You need to seek to understand your moral dilemma and then, if that's struggling, if you're struggling with that, then empathize and reflect on what could have made them do what they did.

00:19:00.365 --> 00:19:07.882
Then, with empathy, comes a willingness to seek perspective, because you're walking a few moons in their shoes.

00:19:07.882 --> 00:19:14.567
Then you need to look at and reflect on your own values and principles.

00:19:15.236 --> 00:19:19.066
Ask yourself whether forgiveness aligns with your core beliefs.

00:19:19.066 --> 00:19:27.306
Maybe you didn't grow up with the word forgiveness, but you hold strong on the value of compassion or empathy.

00:19:27.306 --> 00:19:31.864
Are you able to forgive using those personal values?

00:19:31.864 --> 00:19:39.086
Instead, of course, you need to evaluate the extent of the harm caused or done.

00:19:39.086 --> 00:19:46.048
In the example I gave of our locum vet and their near miss, no harm was done.

00:19:46.048 --> 00:19:55.305
Ask yourself whether forgiveness would have been the right thing to do in that situation, appropriate given the nature and the consequence of the wrongdoing.

00:19:55.305 --> 00:19:59.986
So always look at what was the extent of the harm done.

00:20:00.715 --> 00:20:03.963
Are you just not forgiving them because you just don't forgive?

00:20:03.963 --> 00:20:08.617
Always, where possible, communicate, if you're able.

00:20:08.617 --> 00:20:12.086
Have an open and honest conversation with the person involved.

00:20:12.086 --> 00:20:16.865
Let them know your feelings, concerns and your expectations.

00:20:16.865 --> 00:20:23.012
They can't mind read you, any more than you have the magical skill of mind reading them.

00:20:23.012 --> 00:20:32.547
Just because you forgive someone doesn't mean to say you're giving them carte blanche, right to go out and do it all again.

00:20:32.547 --> 00:20:47.141
Make sure that you set boundaries to protect yourself in the future, especially if your professional reputation might also be at stake and if forgiveness is just too hard to involve seriously.

00:20:47.141 --> 00:20:50.932
Consider professional help, a mediator or a counselor.

00:20:50.932 --> 00:21:06.565
If you're grappling with your own moral dilemmas or actions, then make sure that you forgive yourself, acknowledge your mistakes, learn from them and make a promise to yourself to commit to investing in your own personal growth and development.

00:21:07.166 --> 00:21:12.605
Check out episode 149, the first one in this series on self forgiveness.

00:21:12.605 --> 00:21:17.442
I heard from a vet last week who thanked me for this episode.

00:21:17.442 --> 00:21:26.067
Apparently she said it made a huge difference and was just what she needed to hear and do at that time.

00:21:26.067 --> 00:21:30.326
So I'll put the link to that with this episode notes.

00:21:30.326 --> 00:21:35.383
Keep in mind, please, that forgiveness isn't an instant fix.

00:21:35.383 --> 00:21:40.259
It's not going to auto magically necessarily happen overnight.

00:21:40.781 --> 00:21:42.688
Forgiveness needs time and patience.

00:21:42.688 --> 00:21:54.184
Unfortunately, it takes often takes time to heal and to let go of destructive and negative feelings, especially if you've been hanging on to them for a very long time.

00:21:54.184 --> 00:22:02.162
Be patient with yourself and the process when you consider the bigger picture, the broader impact of forgiveness.

00:22:02.162 --> 00:22:14.143
It can contribute to your and to your personal and professional growth, to reconciliation and the well-being of relationships, workplaces and communities.

00:22:14.143 --> 00:22:20.705
Remember that forgiveness is a personal journey and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

00:22:20.705 --> 00:22:33.502
It's important to make decisions that align with your values and provide you with a sense of closure and healing, even in the face of moral dilemmas.

00:22:33.502 --> 00:22:43.311
Is forgiveness of yourself and others part of your clinic's ethos?

00:22:43.311 --> 00:22:45.718
It's just what you all do.

00:22:45.718 --> 00:22:49.147
This is how it is at your clinic you forgive.

00:22:49.147 --> 00:23:19.638
If you do have a culture of forgiveness and your clinic is currently advertising for staff, you can make your advertisements get stronger legs and have more impact and attract the type of job applicant you want by shouting about this using your vet clinic business listing at vetclinicjobscom, the place where good employers shine online and can be found by vets and nurses looking for jobs with good employers.

00:23:19.638 --> 00:23:27.445
If you want to shine brighter than other clinics, then set yourself up with a premium listing.

00:23:27.445 --> 00:23:37.561
I promise it won't break the bank, because then you'll be able to include this aspect of your clinic's culture as part of your clinic's business profile.

00:23:37.561 --> 00:23:47.999
Clinic values is a special searchable field that job seekers can use to check out a vet clinic's culture when they're applying for jobs.

00:23:47.999 --> 00:23:52.694
Visit vetclinicjobscom and check it out for yourself.

00:23:52.694 --> 00:24:01.902
As I said, you can start advertising your jobs for free as soon as you've set up your free clinic's profile.

00:24:07.617 --> 00:24:11.172
Again, we've barely scratched the surface of forgiveness.

00:24:11.172 --> 00:24:39.147
We've peeled off another layer of the onion, as you may have heard me say before, if you've been following this series, think of forgiveness as being like a cloak woven from diverse threads of psychology, philosophy and human experience, a cloak that, when you wrap it around yourself, has the power to heal wounds, to mend relationships and to set you on a path towards growth.

00:24:39.147 --> 00:24:46.991
Next week, we're going to be looking at the healing of collective wounds through forgiveness.

00:24:46.991 --> 00:24:56.926
Until then, remember that forgiveness is a journey, one that starts within and radiates outward, touching lives and transforming hearts.

00:24:56.926 --> 00:25:06.537
This is Julie South signing off, inviting you to go out there and be the most fantabulous forgiving version of you you can be.
